WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades can give you an increase in specific statistics. Each upgrade increases item upgrades level by 3. Each upgrade also increases a random substat.

Upgraded gear generally sees greater value for trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or very high stat variation (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades are not as valuable for those with lower requirements due to the requirement to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader enables players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapons. The item upgrades used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to the enchantments.

You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader every few weeks to ensure that your equipment is up-to-date.

Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item, however they'll always be less expensive than purchasing new equipment. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest up to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that are used to level up weapons, tools, armor, and accessories. They are purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon, or armor. The button will show a preview of an item level Upgrade's next upgrade level if there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than gloves or bracers for instance. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a set number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. Once an item is upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Item upgraders can be found in a variety of locations, including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of obtaining a new recipe. The discount on upgrades increases with the number of items being upgraded. It can also be boosted by having players complete some specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at the beginning unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that can be used to upgrade require several methods which is both an improvement and a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been modified a bit, and some new features added. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a specific level for an item in an armor slot, upgrading other items to that same item level will cost less even in the event that they belong to another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is available across all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is cut too, but it is only available when certain milestones have been reached.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW, players have a variety of options. Flightstones are an item that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1 and are available in 4 ranks.

The first thing to be aware of is that crests can only be used to purchase equipment of a particular rank, and that each rank has its own requirements for its upgrade items path. The most basic and straightforward upgrade route costs 15 crests while the more complex one requires as many as 20 crests depending on the type of gear being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by completing content of the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities for lower-tier gear, raids or dungeons with any difficulty for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses and dungeons for endgame gear. The crests can then be exchanged with an upgrader like Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and routes.

Utilizing these new currencies isn't too complicated however, the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. For example, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it will no longer require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible level for all their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests in a wise manner, as they are only used for one purpose. For instance it's a good idea to utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests on the best equipment available, and then save Drake and Wyrm crests for the next batch of upgrades you plan to create. This is particularly relevant for rings and trinkets that take up multiple slots on the character which will only be able to avail the account-wide discount if all of the slots are filled with high-quality gear.
