How to Replace an audi car keys G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are audi key fob not working firing anymore. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of an Bosch model, which is what ours are. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your new audi key because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is turning. When this sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission, as well as the rest of the Car Key Cover Audi's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost and Audi Keyless Go then sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points. This is a common component across the audi a4 replacement key 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
